I think we’ve both asked ourselves this question many times, especially when you read yet another cookie-cutter urban fantasy that quickly merges into all the others, sinking without a trace. I mean, how many leather-clad, kick-ass heroines with tattoos can a girl relate too before she burns out? (This might be a topic for another post entitled “Is there only one graphic designer for the entire genre?” or “Please stop with the Crouching Girl, Visible Back Tattoo book covers!”
But then you read the genius words that flow from Karen Chance, Ilona Andrews, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, Karen Marie Moning and all of the other masters, or stumble upon a brand-new author (like Kelly Gay and Elle Jasper last year) and all is instantly forgiven. And then the yearly countdown to the next book begins…
I think it’s the possibility presented in these books that is most appealing. The fact that these worlds are all too plausible. Just a quick side-step of reality and any of us could be there. But that’s just me.
Let us know what you think or why you read urban fantasy/supernatural books.
